Pottery is made form raw clay, mine is from Medicine Hat, Alberta. I use 3 types of clay, the most common one I use is Stoneware Clay. It starts out as a "hunk" which is then formed into a shape; my favorite process is throwing on the wheel.
Once the shape is formed
it is set to dry until
leather hard.
Trimming and the additions such as
handles are next.
Second drying time to remove moisture
before the item is put into a kiln for the first firing,
usually 7 hours
then cooling in the kiln for at least 12 hours.
Next is cleaning, glazing and a glaze firing
(another 7 hours in the kiln).
I fire to cone 6 which is a higher heat
than the first firing
which enables to glaze and clay to harden
to a stage that is non porous and safe for food use.
Final Product.
